Kume no sennin (literally, The Immortal Kume) is a legendary figure popularly depicted in Edo period (1603-1868) paintings. According to a tale from Konjaku monogatari (a collection of tales written in the late Heian period [794-1185]), Kume no sennin, having learned the skills of the immortals in the mountains, was flying over the Yoshino River one day when he spotted a young woman washing laundry. So struck with passion at the sight of her beautiful, pale legs, his powers failed him and he fell to the ground before her. She later became his wife. Most images of Kume no sennin show him tumbling to the ground from a cloud before the woman, and so for this top Hiroi-sensei also depicts him on his cloud in the sky.

Hiroi Michiaki: Umm. This is Kume no Sennin.

Mrs. Hiroi: Yeah.

Hiroi: Kume no Sennin, long ago… This is Kume no Sennin. Ah, this one. Wait…. yes. This one. He was an immortal (sennin) and rode on a cloud. Mmm, he was a person who lived up in the mountains, like a monk. He also loved young women, and when he was going about up on his cloud, two young women were doing their laundry in a stream. And he peeked at them from up on his cloud and he fell, you see, to the ground. He was an immortal and he died because he fell to the earth. It’s that sort of, what should you call it– a cautionary tale. It’s a top that tells the story of how that sort of thing is bad.

久米の仙人は、江戸時代（1603ー1868年）の日本画に広く描かれている伝説上の人物である。今昔物語（平安時代後期（794-1185年）に書かれた説話集）に書かれている話では、山で空中飛行の術を習得した久米の仙人が、ある日吉野川のあたりを飛んでいた時に、若い女が川で洗濯をしているのを見つけた。女の綺麗で白い脚に見惚れて心が乱れ、魔法の術が解けてしまい、その女の目の前に落ちてしまった。後に女は久米の仙人の妻となった。久米の仙人の絵の多くは、雲の上から地面へ、女の目の前に落ちていく姿が描かれており、廣井先生の独楽も久米の仙人が空の上の雲にいる姿を表現している。

廣井夫人：うん。

廣井：久米の仙人が昔・・・こっちが久米の仙人。あぁ、こっちだな。待てよ・・・うん。これだな。あの、仙人ってあの、雲に乗っかって、いる。うーん、山に住んでる人なんですけど、坊さんなんですけど。これがまた女の子が大好きで、雲の上をずっと歩いてたら、小川で女の子が二人洗濯してたの。そいつをこう雲の上からこう覗いたら、落っこってしまったのね、地上に。で、仙人でなくなっちゃったんだよね。地上に落っこっちゃったから。そういう、何つうのかな、戒めっていう。そういうことはよくないですよという謂れの独楽なんです。

This top depicts three young priests gazing up at the rain. When you hold the handle of the base, you are supposed to pick which of the three priest tops you want to move, focus on it, and then carefully jiggle the base back and forth until you get only that one top to spin.

Hiroi Michiaki: And these are young priests in the rain.

Mrs. Hiroi: Yeah.

Hiroi: The young priests in the rain, for some reason, if you spin it one by one they rotate about.

Mrs. Hiroi: Yeah, that’s right, that’s right, that’s right.

Hiroi: This is in there, isn’t it? Ah, Misa-chan–

Misa: Yes.

Hiroi: This is in there, bring it here. Ahh, there it is, there it is. Yeah yeah yeah yeah yeah.

Janell Landis: That’s one I have too. Dusty, yeah.

Hiroi: It gathers dust quickly, right? Because I’m doing my work [here].

Mrs. Hiroi: Yeah. If you polish it, it has a lot of dust.

Hiroi: This, when you go like this, the places you want to spin will spin for you.

Mrs. Hiroi: The place that you think ‘I want it to spin!’ will spin.

Hiroi: Right now I’m thinking that I want this part to spin, though.

Mrs. Hiroi: It’s not spinning.

Hiroi: Huh, I wonder if it’s not going to spin.

Mrs. Hiroi: First, [you have to think of] which part you want to spin. This is all of them, though.

Hiroi: But if you spin the part you want to spin, you often set them all spinning, surprisingly. But the part you wanted to spin–

雨の空を見上げる三人の小僧を表現した独楽。土台の軸棒を持ち、土台に載っている三つの小僧のうちどれを回すかまず決める。その独楽に神経を集中させて、慎重に土台を前後に揺らすことで三つのうち自分の選んだ独楽だけが回るようにする。

夫人：うん、そうそうそう。

廣井：これそこにあるな。あぁ、みさちゃん。

廣井：そこにあるこれ、こっち持ってきて。あぁ、あったあった。そうそうそうそうそう。

ジャネル・ランディス：That’s one I have too. Dusty, yeah.

廣井：すぐ埃たまるのね、仕事やってっから。

夫人：うん。磨いたりなんだりするとすごい埃。

廣井：これこうやって、回したいところがね、回ってくれるの。

夫人：自分で回したいなと思うところ回るの。

廣井：いまここ回したいと思ってるんだけど。

夫人：回んない。

廣井：ふふ、回んねぇか。

夫人：回った回った回った回った。回った回った回った。

廣井：ね。

夫人：自由にできんのね。

廣井：で、今度、今度こ、ここ回してみっかと思う。あー・・・

夫人：回んない回んない。こっちが回ってる。

廣井：止まったら。こっちだけが。こうか。

ジャネル：回った。回った。

夫人：全部回ったほらほらほら。

廣井：全部回って。

夫人：全部回ってきた。こんな回し方すんのね。難しんだよこれ。

廣井：いや、そんなに難しくねよ。や、やってみる？

夫人：ど、どれが回したいか、最初。これは全部だけどね。

廣井：でも回したいものをやると、みんな回った中でも勢いよく回る。回したいやつが。

ジャネル：Look at all of them together.

くずの葉 (kuzunoha)

This top depicts Kuzunoha, a popular figure in Japanese folklore who is a female magic kitsune (fox). In traditional legends, kitsune are said to be able to shapeshift into human figures. In various tales, Kuzunoha is said to be the mother of the famous historical figure Abe no Seimei (921-1005), a well-known expert in Japanese esoteric cosmology (onmyōdō).

There are many variations on the Kuzunoha story, but in its simplest form, the courtier Abe no Yasuna battles and is injured by a hunter who is capturing foxes to sell their livers to make medicine. Freeing a fox (Kuzunoha) trapped by the hunter, Yasuna later encounters a beautiful woman (Kuzunoha in human form) who tends to his wounds and helps him home. They fall in love, are married, and eventually have Abe no Seimei. But several years later, Seimei glimpses his mother’s tail (or in some stories, sees her shadow against a screen in the form of a fox). With her true nature revealed, she must leave her family behind and return to the wild.

Mrs. Hiroi: Yeah. It’s Kuzunoha.

Hiroi: And, if you spin this, this fox leaps out. All of the sudden. Stories about Kuzunoha, there are a lot of sad ones, but here it would be a little hard to explain them, so [I won’t]. Heh heh heh…

くずの葉がテーマの独楽。くずの葉は日本の伝承の中でも人気のキャラクターで、妖術を使うメスのキツネである。伝統的な伝説の中で、キツネは人間に化けることができるとされている。多くの話の中で、くずの葉は歴史的に有名な陰陽師である安倍晴明（921-1005)の母親であると言われている。

くずの葉の話には多種多様あるが、もっとも基本的なものが次の話である。公家の安倍保名は、薬を作るのに必要な狐の肝を売るために狐を捕まえていた狩人と戦い、負傷した。狩人に捕まっていた狐（くずの葉）を助けた保名はその後、美しい女（くずの葉の人間の姿）に出会う。女は保名を介抱し家へ送り届ける。保名と女は恋に落ち、結婚し、後に安倍晴明をもうける。しかし数年後、晴明が母親の尻尾を見てしまう（他の話では、壁に映った母親の影が狐の形をしているのを見たというものもある）。本当の姿がばれてしまったため、くずの葉は家族を置いて自然に戻らなければならなくなった。

ピエロ当独楽 (piero ategoma)

This top is a roulette-style top of a clown. Ategoma-style tops are used for games. When the handle is spun, the clown’s head spins with it, and its nose points to one of the six numbers. Hiroi-sensei notes that Janell taught him how to write the Roman numerals for this top.

Hiroi Michiaki: This is, well, it’s a clown.

Mrs. Hiroi: Yes, it’s a clown.

Hiroi: The way you write these numbers, Landis-sensei taught it to me.

Janell Landis: Yeah yeah yeah yeah.

Hiroi: Right.

ピエロの当独楽である。当独楽というのは独楽遊びの一種であり、独楽の種類でもある。独楽の軸を回すと、下にあるピエロの頭が一緒に回り、鼻が１～６の数字のどれかを指し示す。廣井先生は、この独楽を作るときにジャネルがローマ数字の書き方を教えてくれたことを語っていた。

廣井：この数字の書き方、ランディス先生に教わったの。

ジャネル・ランディス：そうそうそうそう。

からす天狗 (karasu tengu)

This top depicts crow tengu, a type of mythical creature of the tengu variety. They are more distinguishably bird-like, often featured with beaks and feathers. Hiroi-sensei states that they are the children of regular tengu and travel about as messengers who hang lanterns. He therefore depicts them here as bird-headed creatures holding balanced lanterns. Hiroi-sensei also notes that a photograph of this top was featured for some years in a junior high school textbook in Japan.

Hiroi Michiaki: This is… What was this? Ah. The crow tengu.

Mrs Hiroi: Yeah.

Hiroi: The children of the tengu hang paper lanterns and go out as messengers. And here, the lanterns are balanced. And it’s diagonal like this. And here, some years ago, in a junior high art–

Mrs Hiroi: Yeah.

Hiroi: It was printed in a school textbook, you know, this was. Umm about three years [ago], and I received royalties.

Mrs Hiroi: Yeah.

Hiroi: Once a year, well, every year around December I received some [royalties]. 50,000 yen or 60,000 yen. Heh heh heh.

Mrs Hiroi: Yeah. I don’t remember how many hundred yen.

Hiroi: Spending money. Heh heh heh. I received it for about three years. And it was published in a textbook and junior high schools all over the country; it was published in some grade level’s art textbooks.

からす天狗がテーマの独楽。からす天狗は伝説上のキャラクター、天狗の一種である。からす天狗は見るからに鳥の姿をしており、くちばしと羽があるのが特徴である。廣井先生の話では、からす天狗は普通の天狗の子供とされており、提灯を持って使い走りをするのだという。そのため、この独楽は頭が鳥で、提灯を両脇にバランスよく抱えている姿を表現している。またこの作品は日本の中学校の教科書に掲載されたことのある独楽であることも述べていた。

廣井：天狗の子供が、あの、提灯ぶら下げて、お遣いに行くところ。で、ここでバランス取ってるのね。で、こう斜めになって。でこれはね、うんと何年ぐらい前だ、中学校の美術の―

夫人：うん。

廣井：教科書に載ったのね、これ載せて。ええとね、三年ぐらいね、著作権料っつうのもらったね。

夫人：うん。

廣井：一年に、毎年十二月頃いくらもらったんだ。五万か六万。へへへ

夫人：うん。何万もらったか覚えてねぇわ。
